Therapy as Self-Care: How Dr. Katie Heath-Tilford Helped Me Navigate Life’s Challenges
I began therapy with Katie in 2017 because I was going through a complex family situation for which I needed support. I thought it would be for a few months but I have been seeing her ever since (7 years now). I spent my initial time with her sharing my story and unpicking the knots of my family history. I found Katie to be attentive, clear minded and really helpful in looking at my life in ways I hadn’t considered. I gained insight into my past and her suggestions and reflections helped me alter my behaviour for the future which has greatly supported me.
Now I use my sessions as and when I need them – sometimes more intensely than others. Talking to Katie is like having a friend without any of the obligations. You can be totally unfiltered, share everything knowing that this is confidential. She observes you and gives you a firm mirror of yourself, often backs you up and gives bespoke advice of how to deal with difficult circumstances.
Katie’s words guide me in some very hard moments because her methods are practical things you can implement. She also has an excellent memory and will remember things from years ago. I also really admire her knowledge of psychology - she often draws on different practitioners and their methods to help me.
I cannot recommend Katie highly enough. Even when the crisis has passed and I’ve been feeling happier I still see her to check in. Therapy is not for just when times are hard. It is self-care blanket that helps you move forward, helps you to understand your past and reevaluate yourself for the present. We are all works in progress I think and Katie helps you to embrace that, feel supported, giving guidance so that you are stronger and more confident in yourself.
