A Decade of Growth: My Journey with Dr Katie Heath-Tilford
Katie is a highly trained and experienced therapist who I have been seeing for nearly 10 years, since I was aged 16 (weekly to begin with, but in recent years I’ve been seeing Katie on an ‘ad hoc’ basis, as and when I need to). Katie’s commitment to her client’s progress and wellbeing is evident from the moment you meet her. After experiencing the death of a parent during childhood, I remember feeling apprehensive to start therapy and to share some of my most personal thoughts with someone else, but Katie’s presence made me feel instantly comfortable and secure, and able to open up.
Katie is extremely patient and non-judgmental, meaning she creates a space in which clients can explore their own thoughts, in their own time, and without fear of criticism. I have always felt encouraged to dig deep and to be honest with myself and Katie about the feelings I am experiencing, an essential component of effective therapy.
Katie’s sessions are characterised by a balance of challenge and support. She knows when it is appropriate to gently push your mindset towards growth or when it is instead better to provide comfort and reassurance.
Although Katie is very well qualified, having achieved her Professional Doctorate in psychology and Psychotherapy, she is still able to explain the most complex psychological concepts in a manner that is accessible and relatable. I personally find it very useful to understand the psychology behind my decisions or behaviours, and Katie is always able to provide this context and insight for me. For example, by looking to the past, Katie can use psychological frameworks to explain how a previous childhood experience may have been instrumental in shaping a present response.
Katie has been an extremely important figure in my journey of dealing with and processing childhood bereavement, and I wouldn’t be nearly as positive or resilient in my mindset today if it wasn’t for her and the techniques that she has taught me. I feel incredibly lucky to have found Katie all those years ago and indebted to her for all the wisdom she has shared with me over the years. I would urge anyone considering therapy to try Katie and her range of hand-tailored therapeutic offerings, it won’t be a decision you regret.
