What is EMDR?

EMDR therapy is a rapidly effective form of psychotherapy which can achieve real change. It was developed by American psychologist, Francine Shapiro in 1987. A great deal of subsequent research into EMDR therapy and its efficacy for the treatment of psychological trauma has been well established and as a result, EMDR is now a recommended trauma treatment in many national and international guidelines, including the World Health Organisation, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, the American Psychiatric Association, the UK Psychological Trauma Society, and the guidelines of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). Over 300 studies have been published showing EMDR to be effective for treating depression, anxiety, phobias, addictions, body dysmorphia and many other mental health issues.

How does it work?

EMDR is a complex therapy which works on reducing the level of disturbance, whilst transforming dysfunctional belief systems. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (either eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation such as buzzers held in each hand, or headphones, or bilateral taps on the sides of each knee). This bilateral stimulation facilitates the processing of disturbing or traumatic memories in much the same way as your brain does in the REM phase of sleep.

My EMDR training and approach

I have completed the full EMDR Europe Accredited EMDR training and I am a therapist member of the EMDR Association UK and Ireland. I have also undertaken additional training in Attachment Focused EMDR. This approach is particularly useful when working with people who have experienced developmental trauma such as being neglected or abused as children, whether physically, emotionally, sexually, or spiritually. Developmental trauma can profoundly impact a child’s developing brain which may result in a range of emotional and mental health issues in later life.

The number of sessions required varies depending on each individuals and their presenting issues. In order to assess this, I invite you to attend a consultation session at half the usual session cost, so that we can discuss your needs and I can give you a better idea of how we would work together if you decide to proceed.
